Tutuorial Video: How to smooth out chalk and pastel

Other great things about using chalk and this technique: Chalk is ERASABLE unlike alcohol marker. So grab a rubber eraser, the kind you can squish and mold into any shape you want, and you can easily pick up any stray pigment off the page around edges or even go over a colored area with it and erase the chalk altogether! Also, if you don't want to brush over the chalk, just dabbing the dry areas lightly to wet them is enough to melt the binder and smooth out the pigment and set it on the paper : ) Chalk really is an awesome, versitile, and CHEAP meadium, and one of the ORIGINAL soluble ones you're introduced to as a kid : 3
Chalks Used:
Crayola Drawing Chalk (comes in various size packs. Skin tones (light and dark) come in the 144 ct set)
Prang Pastello Paper Chalk (more saturated than Crayola)
Prang Ambrite Paper Chalk (more saturated than Crayola. Great chalk for regular bulk copy paper, would highly recommend if using that surface a lot above all others) Don't get the 144 ct set. That's a school one and colors are random and don't guarantee all colors.
Other tools used:
91% Isoproply alcohol (rubbing alcohol.)
Small Acrylic Paint Brush. Ideally, a small container with a cap to store your rubbing alcohol in.
Random Tid-bits: This method works BEST with drawing chalks and worse with soft pastel. Though this video is designed as a budget friendly art alternative to more expensive supplies, if you can afford it and want to play with chalk a lot more, I highly recommend using a paper with some tooth to it like the strathmore charcoal pads or the UArt Pastel papers. You can do some really amazing blending on those surfaces and they hold onto the pastel and chalk dust more than regular paper will. : 3 Either way, happy arting~ Also, all art supplies I grab are usually from Blick online since they're really cheap and really great quality and selection!
